POS/Applied Technique:

• Cervical spine. Read the contra-indications on BONEr! (Uh... we did this 2 weeks ago. Hmm.)

• Prepare the next tutorial.

 

SF/Developmental Biology:

• Plasticene??? Focusing on the heart (spiral septum; ventricular septum; atria and atrial septum) and body cavities (intraembryonic coelom; pleural cavity; pericardium; abdominal cavitiy).

Assessments and deadlines, by due-date

 

Remember that the MM2006 students should now use their Bedford Uni number instead of the previous exam number.

The exam timetable has been published on the Course Information section of BONEr.

16 Oct 2009	CAE	deadline	Hand in your completed "Project Outline Form", describing your research question. (That file appears broken, but it's okay -- right-click and choose "save as", and add ".rtf" to the end of the file. Open that saved file from your desktop, and it should work.)
16 Oct 2009	Clinic	deadline	Let Fran know about any swaps you wish to make with other students over the Xmas clinic period. Details in her email on First Clarse.
Nov? 2009	POS: Technique	deadline	Hand in your SWOT form (strengths; weaknesses; opportunities; threats). Due mid-way through the term, so probably November. The SWOT form is on page 12 of the "course information technique handbook" in the POS section of BONEr.
Nov and Dec	POS: Technique	ongoing	Get the tutors to observe you and write in your technique log-book. This will be handed out in week 9.
Week 11, 23 - 27 Nov or Week 12, 30 Nov - 4 Dec	Clinic	Assessment (formative)	Clinic tutor feedback (formative assessment) will be given in week 12, according to an email from Fran. The tutors will write the feedback during week 11 but give it to us in week 12. You need to have completed the clinic feedback form in advance, and bring it along to the session.
1st Dec 2009	SF: NMS	Assessment (formative)	Formative assessment.
2nd Dec 2009	SF: Embryology and Rheum/Ortho	Assessment (summative)	First of two written exams for SF. 2 hours. This one is worth 30%. Second exam is on 4th May 2010 and is worth 70%.   On 20th Oct, Tim seemed to suggest that rotations of the stomach and viscera would be examined "later", so presumably the exam will be on: development of the heart, shunts; body cavities; development and migration of kidneys and gonads; clinical presentations of developmental abdnormalities in these processes.
Over Xmas	CAE	ongoing	Mel has advised that we review the ethics form over the Xmas period, since it is quite complex. This form won't be available until around week 10-11.
8th Jan 2010	CAE: Lit review.	Assessment (summative)	Critical Literature Review deadline. Summative, 40%. 1,500 words of approx 15-20 references. There are two LRPs on BONEr -- one on literature searching, one on critical literature review.
19th Feb 2010	CAE: Ethics and research proposal.	Assessment (summative)	Detail your project methodology and ethical considerations. Summative, 60%.
22nd March 2010	OP: Patient Management Problems.	Assessment (summative)	25% of total. 75 minutes duration. Sequential presentation of details from a case history. Expected to show reflection and development.
28th April 2010	OP	Assessment (summative)	Written exam. 35% of total. 2 hours 30 mins duration. Does this include pathophysiology??
30th April 2010	OCCS: Patient study.	Assessment (summative)	2000 word written exam. 70% of total. Patient study, concentrating on conceptual strategies used in clinical decision making.
4th May 2010	SF: NMS and Neurology	Assessment (summative)	Second of two written exams for SF. 2 hours. This one is worth 70%. Previous exam is on 2nd Dec 2009 and is worth 30%.
1st June 2010	CAE	Assessment (summative)	Presentation -- 10 minute presentation of case-study. Worth 30% of total.
10th June 2010	POS: Technique OSPE	Assessment (summative)	OSPE. See also 17th June. 3 x 10 minute stations, and 1 x 10 minute clinical rehabilitation station. This is worth 70%, the other 30% coming from continuous assessment.
11th June 2010	OP	n/a	Clinic tutor feedback (summative??) will be given on this date.
17th June 2010	POS: Technique OSPE	Assessment (summative)	OSPE. See also 10th June. 3 x 10 minute stations, and 1 x 10 minute clinical rehabilitation station. This is worth 70%, the other 30% coming from continuous assessment.
18th June 2010	OP: OSCE	Assessment (summative)	Worth 25%. 90 minutes duration. According to Tim Oxbrow, this may include clinical exams (DCP etc), may include case histories.

A bit of news

 

• 4 Nov 2009: The CAE LRPs on Critical Literature Review are available to collect from Registry. The optional CAE talk from Mel is based on these LRPs. Two useful links in the LRPs:

• 30 Oct 2009: Make sure you're subscribed to the "news and announcements" forum in the Neurology section of BONEr. Click on the link that says "subscribe to this forum".
• 30 Oct 2009: Enda has announced our Pathophysiology assignment for reading week on First Clarse.
• 28 Oct 2009: The spring term clinic days have been announced. For SP Yr 3 and MM Yr 4, it's groups A, B and C on Mon and Thurs afternoons with DCR tutorials on Mondays and OCCS on Thursdays; groups D, E and F Weds and Fri mornings with DCR tutorials on Wednesdays and OCCS on Fridays.
• 22 Oct 2009: All clinic feedback sessions will be in week 12, according to Fran. You need to complete the clinic self-assessment form in advance, and bring it along to your session. The feedback schedule and tutor report schedule are in the Clinic Policies and Procedures section of BONEr.
• 20 Oct 2009: Final clinic rotas for Xmas holidays have been posted on the Clinic Policies and Procedures section of BONEr.
• 14 Oct 2009: Some extra (optional?) tutorials have been announced by Melanie Wright on First Clarse. They are for anyone planning to do a systematic review in their dissertation. Yr 3's will be in the 11th week, details to be announced later.
• 9 Oct 2009: Email from Fran Wiggins on First Clarse with the DRAFT Xmas clinic holiday rota 2009.
• 9 Oct 2009: Due to there being no technique on 29th October (because all the tutors are going to the graduation) the formative assessment will be moved one week later. Is that right??
• 2 Oct 2009: Email from Heather on First Clarse -- we have a new course! See Heather's email on First Clarse for details, in 3rd Year Notices. Enda Butler will be teaching a 3-hour lecture on pathophysiology, once per week. I'm asking if this is assessed or optional.
• 2 Oct 2009: Email from Heather about NMS: the Tuesday classes are changing. Tutorials are now split into five groups -- check the email for details.
• 2 Oct 2009: Groups D and E will be in different slots for Developmental Biology seminars on 3rd and 10th Nov. See email on First Clarse.
• 25 Sept 2009: Email from Sarah Matthews about applying for the BSO Student Fund loan.
• 25 Sept 2009: The Clinic Policies and Procedures section of BONEr has been updated with the clinic tutorial plan, the specialist clinic rotas, and the DCR tutorials on: abdominal exam, CVS exam, and cranial nerve exam.
• 25 Sept 2009: The exam timetable has been published on the Course Information section of BONEr.
• 25 Sept 2009: Email from Phil Heeps saying that the MM2006 students should now use their Bedford Uni number instead of the previous exam number.
• 25 Sept 2009: An email from Fran Wiggins on First Clarse explaining how to request your prefered week of clinic over the Xmas holidays. This has to be done by 9th Oct 2009.
• 25 Sept 2009: An email from Fran Wiggins on First Clarse asking you to confirm that you are listed in the draft copy of the tutor report.
• 21 Sept 2009: An email from Heather on First Clarse saying that the NMS handouts are ready for collection from Registry, as well as being on the SF/NMS part of BONEr.
• 21 Sept 2009: An email from Melanie Wright on First Clarse saying that for those who couldn't attend the CAE lecture last week, she will be repeating it on Wednesday 23rd September between 12.30 and 1.30pm.
• 21 Sept 2009: An email from Andy Lay on First Clarse saying he's updated the Orthopaedics and Rheumatology part of BONEr with all the relevant docs: the Power Point from the Orthopaedics and Rheumatology introduction lecture; the Power Points for the 2nd lecture, which is on fractures; the four core documents (Rheumatology, Introduction to fractures, Upper extremity [common ortho problems] & Lower extremity [common ortho problems]); and various papers that might be of interest.
• 17 Sept 2009: Trevor Jeffries has announced a provisional list of DCR tutorial topics on First Clarse.
• 17 Sept 2009: Sarah Matthews is handing out the student codes necessary to get a 25% reduction on Transport For London costs.

• M. Ost stuff
  • Kristin made a recording of Mark Waters' presentation regarding the M. Ost back at the end of year 2.1. It's a 25Mb mp3 file so may take a while to download.
• Staff student Liaison Committee and Academic Council
  • All minutes from Academic Council and SSLC meetings will be kept here (as long as we don't run out of storage space).
• Timetables
  • Despite Mark Waters asking the ASMs to get all the info onto BONE by 3rd October it was all on BONE on 10th Oct.
  • The timetables are now on BONE, in the "Registry module". This includes lecture timetables, and exam details.
• Athens, Pub Med, online resources
  • How to access Athens: login to the Uni of Bedfordshire library catalogue using the ID number (on your Bed Uni ID card). Follow the other instructions on the Beds Uni lib catalogue page. If you haven't got an ID card, you can collect it from Registry or ask Phil Heeps or Heather Batten for your number. This is the only recommended way of accessing Athens.
  • Here's a list of some approved online repositories of research materials. Very useful for CA&E essays. Includes PubMed, Athens, etc.
  • Bookmarks. Add any site you want to share.
• Electronic submissions
  • The old policy doc on electronic submissions is out of date, and the new handbooks (part 1 and part 2) contain the wrong email address! The email address to submit assignments to is mostassignments@bso.ac.uk
  • Summary from memory: docs should be in Arial 10 point font. Double-spaced. Usually with a page-break between sections. Candidate number should be in the header.
• LRPs, Mod Infs, assessment criteria, reading lists, weblinks, etc.....
  • Everything should now be on BONE in the section for Mixed Mode Yr 3.
• Issues, problems, solutions!
  • Big Issue? No thanks. Keep track of all the issues that arise with timetable clashes, missing lecturers, and all the usual joys.
